Bronze Star
Pictured above is Major Robert E.
Chaney of Little Rock, Arkansas, battalion commander of the Third Battalion of
the Armored Infantry Regiment of the Third Armored Division, congratulating
Sergeant William Teicholz, of 24 Davis Street, Danbury, after the latter had
been awarded a Bronze Star for bravery during the German Winter offensive in
Southern Belgium.
For
heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the
enemy in Southern Belgium during the German Winter offensive, 17
September 1944.
When
pinned down by a heavy concentration of machinegun and rifle fire from a
German machinegun nest located on a terrace along a forward slope,
Sergeant William Teicholz crept and crawled forward on the right flank
to the slope of the hill. Approaching within a few yards of the position,
and while continuously exposed to enemy fire, he hurled one grenade into
the nest, destroyed the gun and killed three Germans. His actions
permitted his platoon to take its objective.
His heroic actions contributed to the success
of the European Theater of Operations Campaign.
