Sgt. William Teicholz

Sgt. William TeicholzWilliam Teicholz was born in New York City in 1918 and lived in Danbury, Connecticut since he was five years old. At the age of 25, he was drafted into the war. During World War II, he was assigned to the 3rd Armored Division, 36th Armored Infantry Regiment, Headquarters Company, where he obtained the rank of Sergeant. He was put in charge of an eleven man crew and supervised their work as well as commanded the 105mm Sherman tank in his care during the European Theater of Operations. He also acted for a time as an artillery observer, taking azimuth readings and making the necessary calibrations to insure accurate range and fire. He assembled and disassembled, inspected and maintained the 105mm howitzer. Teicholz fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was the recipient of the Bronze Star with Valor for heroism in ground combat in Germany on September 17, 1944. He also received two Purple Heart Medals for injuries he sustained in France on August 15, 1944 and in Germany on March 30, 1945, the Good Conduct Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Medal with four campaign stars (Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe), the American Defense Service Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
